Integrative Graduate Education Research and Training (IGERT)
Fellowships in Optical Communications and Networking

Qualified Candidates are invited to apply for the prestigious National Science Foundation Integrative Graduate Education Research and Training fellowships available starting Fall 2002.

Be US citizens or permanent residents.
Have a BS or MS degree in an appropriate field.
Be committed to pursue a Ph.D. degree in optical communications and networking.

The fellowships include full tuition, a yearly stipend of up to $25,000 through the Ph.D. program, and a yearly travel allowance for attending conferences.

Multi-Disciplinary: IGERT students are provided with a research framework that is multi-disciplinary and vertically integrated.
Team learning and team advising: Every IGERT student will be co-advised by two faculty members. In addition to a major thesis project, each student will have a minor research project, which is the major thesis project for another IGERT student.
Synergy: Each IGERT thesis project is designed to build upon expertise from at least two different groups in realizing an enhanced functionality that is greater than the sum of the parts.
Systems level interaction: A testbed will be set up so that IGERT students and faculty will interact on a systems level.
Well-defined non-technical training: non-technical training in business, communication/interpersonal skills and ethics will be offered as weekend workshops.
