"Study of the Influence of the Dipole Moment Orientation on the Decay Rate of Organic Molecules Close to Metal Surfaces"
Reports have shown that fluorescence can be either intensified or quenched when dyes are places near metal thin films and nanoparticles. However, fundamental and systematic studies of the decay rate of organic molecules in the close vicinity of conductive surfaces have not been reported yet. This project focused on the study of the effects that gold nanospheres have on the fluorescence lifetime of organic molecules with different dipole moment orientation with respect to a metal surface. It was found that both fluorescence intensity and lifetime of Nile Red is influenced by the molecular dipole moment orientation of the dye molecule with respect to a monolayer of gold nanospheres.
