OSA PRESIDENT RECOGNIZES LEGISLATORS AS
CHAMPIONS OF OPTICS
 
The Optical Society of America (OSA) recognized Senator Christopher Bond of Missouri and Congressman Bill Shuster of Pennsylvania as Champions of Optics for their efforts to highlight the role of optics and photonics technology in modern highway transportation systems.

OSA President Eric Van Stryland formally recognized the public policy contributions of Senator Bond and Congressman Shuster during the organization's annual Leadership Conference.

FLORIDA PHOTONICS CLUSTER HAS FORMIDABLE PRESENCE AT PHOTONICS WEST 2006

The Florida Photonics Cluster and its partners, University of Central Florida College of Optics and Photonics, Florida High-Tech Corridor, Metro Orlando EDC, Enterprise Florida, Progress Energy, and the Pinellas County EDC had a strong presence at Photonics West in San Jose, CA at the San Jose Convention Center for the 2006 show. Eleven companies exhibited with the Cluster on the "Florida Isle."  There were a total of 19 Florida companies that exhibited at Photonics West. 

If you have any expectation that your company will exhibit at PW07, please send in an Early Bird contract if you haven't done it already.  When you send in the contract, please indicate somewhere on the form "Please assign us as part of the Florida Photonics Cluster".  If you've already sent in your contract, and didn't indicate the FPC, please send SPIE an email with your request to be part of the cluster grouping.

STRONG TURN-OUT FOR ALUMNI, AFFILIATES, AND ASSOCIATES REUNION

Photonics West Alumni and Affiliates Reunion was a huge success the Gordon Biersch Brewery, San Jose, CA.  Nearly 40 alumni, affiliates and friends attended to show their support for the College of Optics and Photonics.  You can look for future events at our web page www.creol.ucf.edu.

COP FACULTY RECEIVE PRESIDENTIAL MAJOR EQUIPMENT AWARDS

Congratulations to four COP faculty members who have recently received a combined total of $238,449 from the UCF Presidential Initiative to Fund Major Equipment:

  • Dr. Winston Schoenfeld:  "Dual Chamber MBE System for Advanced Growth of Wide Band Gap Oxide/Nitride Compounds
  • Dr. Dennis Deppe:  "Electrochemical Profiling Systems of Precise Analysis of Charge Carrier Densities in Semiconductor Optoelectronic Devices"
  • Dr. Pieter Kik: "High Speed Variable Temperature Photoluminescence Setup"
  • Dr. Guifang Li: "High-speed Signal Acquisition Systems"
The UCF Presidential Major Equipment Awards are an initiative of UCF President John Hitt with an annual budget of $1,000,000 in matching funds for the purchase or upgrade of major equipment to enhance UCF's research capacity.

  • Optics Day. The CREOL Association of Optics Students (CAOS) will host it annual open house.  In previous years CAOS has organized dynamic presentation by COP faculty as well as tour and demonstration of optical phenomena. http://caos.creol.ucf.edu/

April 18-20, 2006

  • Defense and Security Symposium. For the first time, the Florida Photonics Cluster has organized a Florida Isle at the 2006 SPIE Defense and Security Symposium (DSS).  DSS is the largest non-classified conference for defense contractors.
 
April 21, 2006

  • Spring Thing Annual Picnic @ MJ Soileau's (April 22nd).  Look for Details in future issues of e/Highlights.
May 21, 2006
  • SPIE Astronomical Telescopes and Instrumentation Meeting. The College of Optics and Photonics is a cooperating organization and will provide tours for attendees. Click here to visit SPIE.
